Crazy Nancy Pelosi: "We Won Last Night" …Lies Twice About NY-23 Race

They lost the Virginia gubanatorial race by 18 points in a state Barack Obama won by 6 points last year.
They lost the New Jersey gubanatorial race by 4 points in a state Barack Obama won by 15 points last year.

She celebrated today saying, “We won last night.”
“From our perspective, we won last night,” the California Democrat told reporters during a Wednesday photo op. “We had one race that we were engaged in, it was in northern New York, it was a race where a Republican has held the seat since the Civil War. And we won that seat. So, from our standpoint, no, a candidate was victorious who supports health care reform, and his remarks last night said this was a victory for health care reform and other initiatives for the American people.”
She’s still ready to ram that nationalized health care bill through the House this week.

As pointed out below. Democrat Bill Owens campaigned against the public option.
Pelosi was lying.
And, Democrat Michael R. McNulty represented NY-23 from 1989-1993.
But, it sounds better when you say “the first time since the Civil War.”

First: Given that Ft. Drum is in NY-23, the margin of victory could very easily have been overcome by military absentee ballots that were cast for the R on the ticket long before Scozzafava withdrew.
Second: Up until a month ago, Pelosi was in a win-win situation: if Owens won, she got a Democrat vote; if Scozzafava won, she got the vote of a RINO who was even more liberal than Owens (and who probably would have switched parties, anyway). In other words: before the Hoffman impact, Pelosi was picking up a vote, regardless of the party with whom the winner caucused.
Thus, Pelosi can only claim a “win” here (in any meaningful way) due to the goalpost-moving impact of Hoffman.
That a no-name candidate running as a strong conservative (in a supposedly “moderate-liberal” Republican district) and who a month ago was dead in the water not only forced the liberal RINO to withdraw and quite nearly knocked off Owens (even after Scozzafava endorsed him) should be a matter of extreme alarm for Pelosi. In NY-23, 46% voted for a third-party conservative, and 51% voted against the Republican-endorsed Democrat – in an election that will be repeated in 364 days.
Third: Owens doesn’t represent the ObamaCare win Pelosi claims. Owens campaigned against a public option. (Does anyone here think that Scozzafava would have done anything other than support ObamaCare fully?)
So, in the end, Pelosi increased her caucus by one, but with respect to the Crown Jewel – ObamaCare – the result was, at best, a push.

Hoffman was a contender, and would have won had Dede stayed in the race.
Watch out for the wolves in sheep’s clothing in the RNC.
They libs and RINOs are mostly relieved that they pulled it off, since they had put so much into it.

What took a defeat last night was the Democrat policy of government taxation as a solution to all problems, especially in New Jersey. The thug machine still came up short there.

1) Will the RNC try to run another RINO?
2) Will Hoffman work on his public skills and run again?
3) How big a campaign war chest does Hoffman have?

The numbers don’t lie. The NYT reports with 95% of precincts reporting, Owens 49.4%, Hoffman 45% and Scozzafava 5.6%. I add this up and Republican/Conservatives got 50.6% of the vote. As Chip above says, military absentee voters, and I’ll add party line voters, made up Dede’s vote, which in a more normal race, means the Democrats have nothing to cheer about.

Does anyone other than me find it odd that the NY 23rd race posted a 10 point swing literally overnight? Just one day before the election, Hoffman held a lead of anywhere from 4-6 points, depending upon which poll you read. If this is true, Hoffman lost up to 10% overnight with no remarkable incidents. The RINO had already given her support to the Dem prior to the poll. I smell a big rat. The rat looks like a donkey to me.

I wouldn’t put too much trust in the accuracy of those late polls. Given the monumental change (one major-party candidate dropping out) at such a late stage (one week before the election), I doubt that any of the pollsters could have plausibly accounted for those changes accurately.
Bottom line: the polls simply weren’t accurate.
IMHO, the RNC running ads against Hoffman, plus Scozzafava endorsing Owens, plus the pre-voted absentee ballots (cast before the voted candidate dropped out) accounted for the vast majority of the reason that Hoffman came up just short.
The rest is probably accounted for the Obama machine’s GOTV effort (something they’re very good at – especially concentrated on a specific, local race such as this one).
That Hoffman came up a bit short is not the story, but rather that he quite nearly pulled off the upset of the century.

When people say that New York-23 has been held by Republicans since the Civil War, they mean the geographical area now in NY-23 — not the district that happened to have the number 23.
New York has lost a lot of House seats over the years, and so the district with the number 23 has moved all over. It used to be in the Bronx, later it was in the Albany area, and now it’s up by the Canadian border.
To figure out whether the geographical area has been represented by Republicans since the Civil War, one would have to check the district maps and see what the district number was in each decade after the redistricting.
If you just look at the Wikipedia article “New York’s 23rd congressional district,” you will see lots of Democrats in the district’s history, but most of them weren’t elected from anywhere near the current boundaries of NY-23.

JB: This is exactly what I was talking about above. McNulty represented the Albany area, which when he started in Congress was then called NY-23. After redistricting, he represented a similar geographic area which was then called NY-21.
Meanwhile, the number 23 got reassigned twice. The district that Owens won yesterday wasn’t known as the “23rd Congressional District” until the elections in 2002. Before that, it had other boundaries and different numbers.

It was a victory for the Dems, make no mistake about that, however it was a Pyrrhic victory, a victory which is so costly and has so little effect as to be ‘more trouble than it’s worth.’ Given that Owens is more moderate than S, that definition fits perfectly.
Look at how many people voted….around 125,715. Now combined Owens and S raised over $2,500,000 ($900,000 from the RNC to Scozzafava alone) and only 61,666 votes went to Owens, meaning that each of them cost the left at least $40.54. There were the votes for Scozzafava, however it seems logical that the majority of them were the result of soldiers abroad voting party line early and that with the abrupt changes, that they would have gone to Hoffman.
That type of spending is unsustainable with regard to elections, especially elections to Congress. Corzine spent some $30,000,000.00 in the Jersey governor race, however much of it was from his own pocket. Nonetheless, that $30,000,000.00 only bought him 1,048,827 votes at a price of $28.60 per vote. Despite the massive amount of money put into the race, on average $11.94 or 41.75% less was spent on votes successfully secured by Corzine than votes secured by Owens–and this is a normal governor election, not a congressional off-year election in a state with 26 districts.

The fact that a Democrat represented NY-23 when NY-23 was in the Bronx does not change the fact that, at the time, a Republican was representing the area now in NY-23, the area in the far north of the state.
Put it another way. Charlie Rangel started out representing NY-18, then NY-19, then NY-16, and now NY-15. Has he been moving, or has his district changed numbers? (Hint: the latter.)
