Sunstein urges: Abolish marriage
[The U.S. government should abolish its sanctioning of marriage, argued Cass Sunstein, President Obama's regulatory czar.
Sunstein proposed that the concept of marriage should become privatized, with the state only granting civil union contracts to couples wishing to enter into an agreement.
Sunstein explained marriage licensing is unnecessary, pointing out people stay committed to organizations like country clubs and homeowner associations without any government interference.
"Under our proposal, the word marriage would no longer appear in any laws, and marriage licenses would no longer be offered or recognized by any level of government," wrote Sunstein and co-author Richard Thaler in their 2008 book, "Nudge: Improving decisions about health, wealth and happiness."

“I have argued that the Constitution … forbids government from refusing to pay the expenses of abortion in cases of rape or incest, at least if government pays for childbirth in such cases,” Sunstein wrote.

Sunstein argues that refusing to fund abortion “would require poor women to be breeders,” while co-opting women’s bodies “in the service of third parties” – referring to fetuses.
Sunstein wrote he has no problem with forcing taxpayers to fund abortions even if they morally object to their money being used for such a purpose.]

The western Massachusetts university town of Amherst is mulling a resolution urging the Congress to release cleared Guantanamo Bay detainees into the United States and calling for the town to welcome those detainees into the community. . . .
"The United States has a long history of being a place of refuge and asylum for persecuted people. There's nothing new about this," said Gerry Weiss, one of the two selectmen supporting the resolution. "This is the tradition of the United States." . . .
In briefing material supplied to the selectmen, the group said the resolution "asks our local community to look beyond the stereotype that all the men at Guantanamo are 'terrorists,' and instead to look at each man as a human being who deserves human rights and a presumption of innocence until proven guilty."

In October 2001, we wrote about the decision of the Amherst Board of Selectmen to ban the American flag from the city's Main Street. Deval Patrick’s campaign was run by Axelrod and was a template to Obama’s presidential run. Patrick is tanking because he is an empty suit.

My positions are my own. I think them through. I am a Democrat at heart and I want to like and respect Obama but I read First Thing blogs and other conservative blogs and sites because I really want the full picture, I really want to hear all the arguments. And I read legitimate criticism of the man that pains me, but I keep reading. and I read criticism of his policies that force me to evaluate my own support of them, and that’s not fun either.
So when I see people dismiss me for motives I don’t have and positions and attitudes I don’t hold . . . I mean, do you really think you can hurt me with that stuff? I’m being honest and I’m on the level and I post not to make people mad, but to have a dialogue. I hope you do the same.

The excuse for chiseling on troops, as Rahm Emanuel recently raced to the cameras to explain, may be pinned on the problematic Afghan elections and concerns about the government’s fraud and corruption. But how that translates into a decision to give, say, 20,000 troops instead of 40,000, remains murky. If there is just a little fraud, do they split the difference at 30,000? It is more than a little incoherent if that is the consideration.
And finally, it might just be that Obama isn’t very good at decision-making and is waylaid by dumb suggestions from unqualified advisers, paralyzed by domestic political concerns and queasy about crossing his netroot fans. If so, that would be troubling indeed and represent further evidence that a law professor and legislator doesn’t necessarily possess the skills — let alone the judgment — to operate successfully as commander in chief.

I remember politicians who spoke without teleprompter. There was a German politician, I think it was Franz-Josef Strauss, who always had a huge stack of notes with him at a speech, but he NEVER read from them. He spoke without notes. He had that stack of notes simply to help him get over his nervousness before the speech.
The chief of the Swiss SVP, Christopher Blocher, is exactly like that. Never has any notes on him, and he’s damn eloquent.
Obama could learn one or two things from them. Especially from Blocher. There are only two decent party leaders in Europe: Wilders and Blocher.
