SIGN the Petition– STOP the Transfer of Terrorist Detainees From Gitmo

Yesterday, I spoke with Senator James Inhofe. Among other things, he encouraged me to help get the word out on his Gitmo petition. Next week, Senator Inhofe will push his amendment, S.Amdt.1559, to the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2010 (S.1390), which prohibits the transfer of detainees from Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to any facility in the United States.

INHOFE EMPOWERS AMERICAN VOICES OPPOSED TO DETAINEE TRANSFERS:

** Please take 1 minute and sign the petition HERE.

From the Office of Senator James Inhofe (R-OK):

Today, U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a Senior Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, posted on his website a petition opposing the transfers of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (GITMO) to the United States. The petition is also in support of Inhofe’s amendment, S.Amdt.1559, to the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2010 (S.1390), which prohibits the transfer of detainees from Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to any facility in the United States. In a YouTube video, Inhofe invited Americans to sign the petition and he promised to show the petition to his fellow Senators before they vote on this important legislation.

“By more than a 3 to 1 margin, Americans are opposed to detainees being transferred to their home states. And to date, the views of the American people have not changed,” Inhofe said. “Regardless, the administration is committed to fulfilling its political campaign promise to close GITMO, even though President Obama has yet to visit the facility for himself.

“Right now we have an opportunity to stop the President from bringing terrorists to American soil. My amendment will do just that, but I need you to weigh in. By signing this petition, you are telling the Senate and the President that it is unacceptable to house terrorists in your home states. I will make sure that my Senate Colleagues see these petitions and that they are aware of your opposition before they vote on this very important legislation.”

Here is the petition:

PETITION

I am one of the many Americans that does not support the transfer of detainees from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to the United States. I believe transferring terrorist detainees to the United States threatens our national security and could afford these terrorists with constitutional rights reserved for U.S. citizens – risks the U.S. should not be willing to take.

There are a majority of Americans that stand by me: a recent USA Today/Gallup Poll reported that by more than 2 to 1, Americans say the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility should not be closed and by more than 3 to 1, Americans oppose moving some of the accused terrorists to prisons in their own states. In addition, 27 states have passed measures that would prevent detainees from being sent to their states. These numbers should not be ignored.

Because of my position on closing GITMO, I support Senator Inhofe’s amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 that prevents the Obama administration from transferring terrorist detainees to the United States. I hope you will support this amendment as well.

It’s not often a senator takes the time to reach out to the blogosphere.
Please take a minute to support Senator Inhofe on this very important issue.
