Pelosi Hopes Media Will Keep Her Colombia Lies Under Wraps

Nancy Pelosi opened her mouth to The Politico.
And, she shamelessly lied.

Pelosi killed the Colombia Free Trade Agreement in April.
In an unprecendented move Speaker Pelosi squashed the deal by making an ex post facto change to House rules to avoid the required vote.
The Wall Street Journal reported at the time:

The Democratic Party’s protectionist make-over was completed yesterday, when Nancy Pelosi decided to kill the Colombia free trade agreement. Her objections had nothing to do with the evidence and everything to do with politics, but this was an act of particular bad faith. It will damage the economic and security interests of the U.S. while trashing our best ally in Latin America.

Yesterday, the Speaker was hoping that everyone forgot about her unprecedented move back in April.
The Politico reported:

“We’re always talking back and forth,” she says of the Treasury secretary, a serious environmentalist in his own right and a partner with the speaker on the economic stimulus bill earlier this year. “Colombia is not off the table,” she insists. And although little time remains before the election, Pelosi says that, having raised the issue, Democrats have a responsibility to respond to the Colombian government’s efforts to address complaints of labor abuses and the killing of union organizers.”

Toward this end, her close ally and House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller (D-Calif.) has been charged with making an assessment. “Some people are never going to be for it. Don’t put me in that category. That’s not where I am,” she says of the trade pact. “These things cannot be ignored. If Colombia makes sufficient progress or makes progress — they’re never going to get it all accomplished in any time frame that would facilitate passing a bill.”

That is horrible!
Pelosi says that she will open discussion on the Colombia Free Trade Agreement if: “Colombia makes sufficient progress or makes progress in their efforts to address complaints of labor abuses and the killing of union organizers.”

That is a lie.
The popular Uribe government has already made significant progress in cracking down on violence and murder against unionists in Colombia:

Since pro-American President Alvaro Uribe has been in office Colombian homicides are down by 40%, kidnappings are down by 83% and terrorist attacks are down by 76%.
But, this is not good enough for Nancy Pelosi and Congressional Democrats??? (WSJ and White House)

Since 2002, homicides of trade unionists has fallen between 80% and 86%. (White House)

Pelosi knows she’s lying. The reason she will not bring up a vote on the CFTA is because of the objections her union supporters here at home.
She knows this.
But, don’t expect the media to question her on this any time soon.
What a shame.

More… There have also been reports that Pelosi was sending messages to the FARC terrorists while undermining the Uribe government.
