Hans Blix, Ramsey Clark, Mandela to Hold Mock Trial on Bush

A Who’s Who of distinguished world “activists” will assemble in Cairo this week in the mock trial of George W. Bush, Tony Blair, and Ariel Sharon:

* UN inspector Hans Blix
* Italian Marxist writer Giuliana Sgrena
* Nelson Mandela
* Saddam Apologist Ramsey Clark
* London Mayor Ken Livingstone
* Exiled Big Brother star George Galloway

Hans Blix (aka Hans Brix in Air America) will be called in as a witness as will Italian Communist writer Giuliana Sgrena.

Ramsey Clark, a distinguished panel of Arab lawyers, and former world leaders are meeting in Cairo on Friday to hold a mock trial against President Bush, Prime Minister Blair and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon:

International activists and lawyers involved in the defense of Saddam Hussein say they will hold a mock trial of George Bush, the US president, and the British and Israeli prime ministers for alleged war crimes committed in Iraq and the Palestinian territories.

The prosecution will be headed by Ramsey Clark, the former US attorney-general, who sits on Saddam’s defense team, according to one of the organizers.

The two-day event, set to open on Friday in the Egyptian capital, will be sponsored by the Cairo-based Federation of Arab Lawyers.

It will bring together international lawyers and human rights activists including Ahmed Ben Bella, the former Algerian president, and ex-Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohamad ( a noted Anti-semite).

Ziad Khasawna, the federation’s assistant secretary-general and once Saddam Hussein’s chief lawyer, said Nelson Mandela, the former South African leader and anti-apartheid icon, had accepted an invitation to be the chief judge if his health allows him to travel.

It is interesting that the activists decided to clump the Israeli-Palestinian conflict into the mock trial agenda.

Earlier in the week, Hans Blix said that the US ought to offer Iran assurances that it would not attack:

…What was important was offering Iran a package of “carrots” that would include a US pledge not to attack Iran as well as trade and other economic incentives, some of which the Europeans offered.

The United States has offered North Korea a written promise not to attack it, and a similar offer should be extended to Iran, he said.

Before the US-led war in Iraq, Blix oversaw more than 700 inspections in search of weapons of mass destruction that came up empty.

Speaking at the 25th anniversary of the Arms Control Association, a private group, Blix criticised the Bush administration as putting arms control in reverse in many ways.

Gates of Vienna says that there are other distinguished guests scheduled for jury duty in the trial including: London Mayor Ken Livingstone, British MP George Galloway, and … ta da… the non-kafir, the Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Ekrama Sabri, are expected to be called for jury duty.

Pajamas Media is weighing in on the story.
